Preparing the move

Online Academic Support for Students Moving to Portugal

When a family prepares to move to Portugal, joining a Portuguese school raises practical academic questions: which topics the student has already covered, which ones are new, and how each subject is sequenced here.

Different systems, different routes through the same subjects

Education systems do not always cover the same topics, in the same order, or at the same pace. That does not mean a student is behind — it means their previous route was built differently.

  • Programmes that organise content differently.
  • Topics introduced in different school years.
  • Academic terminology and notation specific to each system.
  • Subjects already studied elsewhere, and others not yet covered.
  • Different pacing and assessment formats.

What can be prepared before the move

One-to-one support makes it possible to map, subject by subject, what the student has already worked on and what the Portuguese curriculum usually expects at that school year. From there, we work on the points where the two routes are furthest apart.

Academic preparation, not administrative advice

Educra does not provide legal, administrative or immigration advice, and does not handle school equivalences or enrolment. Those matters belong to schools and official bodies. Our role is academic preparation.

A learning path, not a package of hours

Preparation starts with a conversation: the student's school history, the expected date of the move, and the year they are likely to join. Only then do we suggest how support should work and which subjects to prioritise.

Looking for help with a specific subject?

Subjects where systems differ most are usually the first to work on. Subject pages are written in Portuguese.

Already in Portugal?

If your child has started at a Portuguese school and is finding some subjects hard, the starting point is different.

Frequently asked questions

We are moving to Portugal. Can Educra help my child prepare academically?
Yes, on the academic side. We work on the differences between your child's previous route and what the Portuguese curriculum expects for the year they will join.
Do you handle equivalences or school enrolment?
No. Those are handled by schools and official bodies. Educra provides academic support only.
How far in advance should we start?
It depends on the student, the subjects involved and the time before the move. In the first conversation we help you see what is realistic.
Does my child need to speak Portuguese already?
Not necessarily. We take language into account when planning support and choosing a teacher, and we can communicate with parents in English.
